Which pull stud does my machine use?
It depends on the spindle, not just the taper: Haas CT40 mills take a 45°, 5/8"-11 stud 2.25 in long, Fanuc Robodrill BT30 a 45° M12 (MAS-1) stud, and Brother BT30 a 60° M12 (MAS-2) stud. Pick your machine below; every row shows its source and whether the builder or two toolmakers confirm it.
Pull studs by machine, with sources
20 rows: 5 from the machine builder's own pages, 4 where two independent toolmakers agree, and 11 with one source only. Machines we could not source are not listed.
A pull stud holds the tool holder in the spindle. The wrong angle, length or thread, or a worn stud, can let a holder drop or damage the spindle. Check your machine manual or ask the builder before you order, especially for rows marked "1 source".

Haas rows come from Haas's tooling store [1], which names the taper (Haas writes CT40 / CT50; MariTool lists the same machines as CAT40 / CAT50 [2]). Which Haas model has which spindle is in Haas's reference document RD0074, which we could not read automatically; check your machine's spec sheet for the taper.

Techniks names the MAS knob angles MAS-I 45°, MAS-II 60° and MAS-III 90° [3]. DIN 69872 and ISO 7388-3 form A studs in PTP's range are 15°. "Same standard" is not proof of fit: builders also specify length and coolant sealing.
Pull stud torque: what each source says
Sources disagree by up to 50%. Use the torque in your machine builder's manual if it gives one. These are general values from toolmakers, not your builder.
| Taper | Techniks chart | MariTool FAQ |
|---|---|---|
| BT30 / ISO30 | 36 ft-lb (BT30 and ISO30) [5] | 20-25 ft-lb [6] |
| CAT40 / BT40 / all 40 taper | 76 ft-lb (all 40 taper) [5] | 45-55 ft-lb (CAT40 or BT40) [6] |
| CAT50 / BT50 | 99 ft-lb (CAT50 and BT50) [5] | 75-90 ft-lb [6] |
| ISO20 | 20 ft-lb [5] | - |
Haas's pull stud pages do not state a torque. MariTool adds that torque should be checked as part of scheduled maintenance [6].
MAS-1 vs MAS-2, CAT vs BT studs
MAS-1 and MAS-2 are knob angles from the Japanese MAS 403 standard: MAS-1 (MAS-I) is 45°, MAS-2 is 60°, MAS-3 is 90° (Techniks). Fanuc Robodrill BT30 uses 45°, Brother BT30 60° (KEMMLER, MariTool).
Are CAT40 and BT40 pull studs interchangeable? No. CAT40 holders take a 5/8"-11 stud and BT40 an M16 stud (Haas, PTP), and lengths differ (Haas CT40 2.25 in, Haas BT40 59.94 mm).
Same taper, different stud. Two CAT40 machines can need different studs: Haas CT40 uses a 45° stud 2.25 in long, while Techniks lists a 15° DIN-style coolant knob for Mori Seiki CAT40. That is why the finder goes by machine, not by taper.
Not sure of your taper? Use the spindle taper identifier. Holding a tool in an ER chuck? ER collet chart and nut torque.

Questions
Which pull stud does a Haas mill use?
It depends on the spindle taper. Haas's own pages list a 45°, 5/8"-11, 2.25 in stud for CT40 (04-0292, TSC 04-0293), a 45°, M16 × 2.0, 59.94 mm stud for BT40 (04-0296, TSC 04-0297), and a 45°, 1"-8, 3.075 in stud for CT50 (04-0294, TSC 04-0295).
What does MAS-1 or MAS-2 mean on a pull stud?
They are knob angles from the MAS 403 (JIS) standard: MAS-1 is 45°, MAS-2 is 60° and MAS-3 is 90°, as Techniks labels them.
Are CAT40 and BT40 pull studs interchangeable?
No. CAT40 takes a 5/8"-11 thread and BT40 an M16 thread, and the lengths differ (Haas CT40 2.25 in, Haas BT40 59.94 mm).
Which pull stud does a Fanuc Robodrill use?
BT30, 45° (MAS-1), M12. KEMMLER lists 305.20.12.25 (form JD, with O-ring, 43.6 mm) for Robodrill and MariTool says its 31109 works on all Fanuc BT30 Robodrills.
Which pull stud does a Brother Speedio use?
BT30, 60° (MAS-2), M12, per KEMMLER (305.20.12.26, no O-ring, 43 mm) and MariTool (31109A). Some older Brother models differ, so check your manual.
What torque should a CAT40 pull stud be tightened to?
Sources differ: Techniks' chart says 76 ft-lb for all 40 taper studs, MariTool's FAQ says 45-55 ft-lb for CAT40 or BT40. Use the value in your machine builder's manual if it gives one.
45° or 60° pull stud: does it matter?
Yes. The angle must match the gripper in your spindle's drawbar. The same BT30 taper uses 45° on a Fanuc Robodrill and 60° on a Brother.
How do I identify a pull stud without the manual?
Measure the thread, the knob angle and the overall length, then use the "measure your old stud" tool on this page to see studs with the same published dimensions. Confirm with the builder before use.
